What are some of the career options outside of Academia for someone about to finish a PhD in neuroscience?

I'm a 4th year PhD student in Psychology/Neuroscience, studying in an Ivy League school. I'm not planning to stay in Academia, so I'm starting to think about what would be some of the highest paid careers that I could apply for once I finish my PhD. As an aside question, how would can I make myself as a good candidate for that type of job?

Dear Phdstudent,
A career in neuroscience can be found in the government sector, the private sector, hospitals, and universities. With the Government, this involves performing scientific research and providing neurological services to members of the public. Neuroscience careers in the private sector are with pharmaceutical companies where people research new drugs. The study of neuroscience can be applied to fields such as advertising where understanding how the brain responds to sensory input can be very important. Legal agencies can also require such professionals as they need to read criminal minds.

Pharma industry generally pays higher salaries than other industries especially to profs dealing with research. Depending on the role in the organisation, you get the salary.

A neuroscience career requires substantial math and science skills. It also helps to be a strong communicator, whether one is conducting research which will need to be written up or working with frightened patients who want someone to explain what is going on. Neuroscience is also a constantly evolving field, which means that people must be willing to commit to continuing education if they want to succeed in this field.

We hope this is of help to you. Thanks.
