No growth in the team.

Hi, I am working in an IT firm for more than 2 yrs now. In my team there are mostly seniors due to which I am not getting a better role or opportunities in the team even when I perform the best in the team. The work is getting really monotonous and I need better roles and opportunities and bigger challenges. What should I do to bypass the long chain of seniors and get better roles?

Dear AB,

When you perform the same job everyday, I am sure that it will become mundane, hence this is quite normal:-) The job that you perform today may seem undesirable even suffocating at times but always remember that where you are now is not necessarily where you’ll be in the future. You can look at the glass as either half-full or half-empty. Use the current job to acquire new skills or references that could make way for the job you want. Take advantage of any training programs offered by your company that could help you get the job you want. NETWORK - within and outside the company. Build recommendations - that can help you in your new job search. Do NOT gate crash. If there is a long chain of seniors then you cannot bypass ALL of them - right? Try to find out opportunities within your current job - like a new project/idea that nobody has thought about or wants to do. Communicate with your Manager frequently. Share with him new ideas/projects that you would want to work on.

To break the boredom, you can also plan team parties, games, quizzes etc. Last but not least, you can hit the gym or go for a walk!
