Dear Richard,

The first job is usually the most difficult to crack! But once you do it - then its very easy. Your experience in graphic design is relevant in todays time when internet is in its boom phase. Animation is a sought after skill. I can empathize with your frustration when companies call you but not fall short of making the final offer. There can be couple of reasons for that - 1) Companies prefer candidates with references 2) They prefer employees with good communication skills 3) They keep the position on hold which means that they interview candidates and keep them on bench so that when there is a valid position it can be filled up quickly.

In the interim, I would suggest that you dont get frustrated but do freelancing projects. There are numerous freelancing sites that you can register yourself - elance.com, guru.com, Odesk.com, and craiglist.com. I have come across many job openings on animationexpress.com as well.

Network. Talk to as many people as possible so that they can tell you about any opportunity that they hear of. Keep applying for jobs and brush your resume/communication skills.

If you keep patience and cool, you will be able to fix this problem.
